  • The suspect later died; an investigation into the shooting is ongoing

A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by an FBI agent and a Yonkers detective Friday evening, three sources familiar with the investigation say.

The agent and detective were conducting an investigation into the alleged bank robber near Van Cortlandt Park when they tried to pull him over at Aqueduct and McLean avenues for questioning, the sources told News 4.

The two apparently saw the man with a weapon and fired at him, the sources said, adding that a gun believed to belong to the suspect was recovered at the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at an area hospital, according to the sources. He has not yet been identified.

The FBI and the Yonkers Police Department are both investigating the case, the sources said.

In a statement on Twitter Friday evening, the FBI confirmed a New York special agent and a Yonkers police officer were involved in a deadly shooting. "No further information will be released at this time," the agency wrote.

An investigation into the shooting is underway, according to the sources. Police tents were erected and crime scene tape was put up around the snowy scene Friday night.

The gunfire startled residents on the usually quiet suburban street. Islajal Sdranovic told News 4 that in the 20 years he had lived on the block he'd never heard gunshots, adding that he didn't believe the neighbors that gathered around the crime scene tape when they told him about the shooting.

"We thought people were joking around," he said.
