Manhattan to Get New Area Code in 2017

Manhattan will get a new area code — 332 — in the spring of 2017, the New York State Public Service Commission announced Tuesday.

Commission Chair Audrey Zibelman said the new area code is needed to meet New York City's growing population and a thriving telecommunications market, which have increased demand for residential and business phone numbers in Manhattan.

"Creating a new area code will allow telephone companies to accommodate consumer demand and expand the use of wireless technologies," Zibelman said.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), which administers the numbering system for telephone networks in the U.S., projected that Manhattan would run out of available codes in late 2017.

A new area code can become effective six months before a forecasted exhaust date. Thus, it's believed that 332 will be assigned to new telephone customers sometime in the spring of 2017.

All telephone companies in the 212, 646 and 917 area code region have been directed to file an implementation plan for the 332 overlay within a nine-month network preparation schedule.

Telephone companies in Manhattan will also have to develop outreach and education plans to inform their customers of the implementation.

After companies provide an implementation plan, the effective date of the area code will be announced.

Once the area code is in effect, New York state will have 18 area codes.
