Ex-Boyfriend Sought in Deaths of Jersey City Woman, 4-Year-Old Son

Authorities say they're searching for the estranged boyfriend of a woman found killed alongside her 4-year-old son inside their Jersey City home last week.

The Hudson County prosecutor said 26-year-old Jose Ronald Santos-Alvarez, a restaurant worker, is a suspect in the homicides of Monika Potoczniak and their son Christopher.

They were found unconscious in their Lincoln Street home last Wednesday and transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The mother had been strangled and the boy suffocated, the prosecutor's office said.

Neighbors were in shock after seeing police bring out the dead mother and son. One woman who lives across the street with her 14-year-old son said she hadn't been able to sleep "because it was so scary and disturbing."

An arrest warrant has been issued for Santos-Alvarez, who is charged with two counts of murder. Authorities said he should be considered dangerous and anyone who sees him should immediately contact police or the Hudson County prosecutor's office 201-915-1345.
