2 Firefighters Injured in Long Island House Fire: Officials

A fire destroyed a house in Central Islip early Saturday and two firefighters were hurt battling the blaze, officials said.

Two firefighters suffered burns, the fire department said. One was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, the other was transported by ambulance, officials said. Both were expected to survive their injuries.

The homeowner suffered minor respiratory problems, firefighters said. No one else was injured.

Seven people and two dogs escaped the two-story home on Bushwick Avenue. They told NBC 4 New York that they awoke to the sound of a smoke alarm, grabbed pets and a few documents and ran.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze but said at this point it appears to be non-criminal. The homeowner said the fire appeared to have started in the garage.
