Police Capture Woman Who Escaped Custody, Crashed Ambulette: Authorities

Authorities say they've captured a woman who allegedly escaped police custody at a Long Island nursing facility, stole an ambulette and then crashed it a short way away Thursday evening.

Melina Silsbe was back in police custody Friday morning after her escape from the St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown on Thursday.

It's not clear how Silsbe was able to slip free from her handcuffs or get not the ambulette.

Suffolk police said the woman and a person from another vehicle were hurt in the crash and taken to a local hospital. They're expected to be OK.

Silsbe, who was arrested on Wednesday, is now facing charges of escape, grand larceny, criminal mischief, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and unlawful fleeing of a police officer.

She's due in court Friday.
