Man, 19, Dies After Being Recovered from Waters off Queens: NYPD

A teenage swimmer who went missing in the waters off Far Rockaway in Queens for two hours has died after rescuers found him and brought him to shore, police say.

Police say the 19-year-old man, identified as Keith Johnson of the Bronx, disappeared around 7 p.m. near Beach 13th Street and the boardwalk. Witness Junior Gomez said the man had been with his girlfriend on shore before he went into the water.

"She was screaming and crying, 'My boyfriend can't swim, help him,'" said Gomez.

Divers searched for two hours in the water, where visibility was only down to two feet, according to an FDNY chief on the scene. They located the missing swimmer and brought him to shore.

Johnson was taken to St. John's Hospital in cardiac arrest and died there.
