Runaway NY Oil Tanker Tips Over, Spills Gallons of Diesel on New York Street

A runaway oil tanker truck crashed into the side of an apartment building, tipped on its side and spilled 100 gallons of diesel fuel on a New York street, a fire official says.

Nobody was injured in the mishap on High Street in Yonkers Monday morning, authorities say.

The 4,000-gallon tanker brakes gave way, descended a hill, hit a car and struck the building while the driver stopped to make a delivery, authorities say. The driver wasn't in the truck at the time of the accident and the building wasn't structurally damaged.

Police immediately stabilized the truck and sealed the leak with absorbent after responding to 911 calls.

Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief Kevin Ford said a hazmat team has stopped the leak. He said the tanker company was sending workers to right the tanker and tow it away.

The company's name hasn't immediately been disclosed.
